Ross Ulbricht Breaks Silence in New Documentary After Pardon

Ross Ulbricht, the founder of the now-shuttered Silk Road marketplace, has partnered with filmmakers to produce a documentary detailing his journey and legal battles.

On January 21, Ulbricht was granted a pardon by President Donald Trump, leading to his release from federal prison. This pardon, which fulfilled a promise made by President Trump during the Libertarian National Convention in May, has received strong support from the cryptocurrency community who have rallied behind Ulbricht’s cause.

The Silk Road, often referred to as “the Amazon for Drugs,” was responsible for facilitating hundreds of millions of dollars in illicit transactions, sparking an intense FBI manhunt that culminated in Ulbricht’s arrest in 2013. He was subsequently sentenced to two life terms plus 40 years for his involvement in running the marketplace.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ulbricht has provided a firsthand account of the creation and downfall of Silk Road, as well as the broader implications of his case. This marks the first time he has directly shared his experience.

Following his 2015 conviction, Ulbricht largely stayed out of the media spotlight, choosing to maintain a low public profile despite widespread curiosity about his case. However, filmmakers Jonah Tulis and Blake J. Harris, known for their work on “Console Wars,” conducted over 60 hours of interviews with the founder in prison, starting in 2019.

Their work has now culminated in a documentary nearing completion, scheduled for release in 2025, with Submarine handling both its production and worldwide distribution.

“Our interviews are incredibly in-depth and cover the entire gamut of Ulbricht’s life,” Harris said. “How he went from being a literal Eagle Scout to the center of a global manhunt,” he added.

The production team also spoke with law enforcement officials who were involved in the investigation of Silk Road.

“Silk Road was a phenomenon,” Tulis said, according to the exclusive report. “But there are many misconceptions about what it was and who Ross really is. Our film is a no-holds-barred look at what really happened and how things wound up spiraling out of control.”
