Argentina’s Vice President Says She Talked to Bukele About BTC

Argentine VP Victoria Villarruel says she is interested in learning more about BTC adoption

Argentina’s Vice President Victoria Villarruel says she spoke to El Salvador President Nayib Bukele “about Bitcoin (BTC)” during the latter’s visit to Buenos Aires.

Villarruel met with Bukele twice during the visit, during which the Salvadoran leader also met with Bitcoin-keen President Javier Milei.

Argentina’s Vice President: El Salvador Is a BTC Pioneer

After her behind-closed-doors meeting with Bukele, the Argentine Vice President told news reporters she had discussed BTC adoption with the Salvadoran leader.

“We talked about Bitcoin, which is an area where El Salvador is a pioneer. We spoke about how they had implemented it. And we spoke about how they managed to attract remittances from citizens abroad that come into El Salvador.”

Villarruel said her conversation with Bukele was “very interesting, very pleasant, and very simple.”

The Vice President added that the two nation’s “parliamentary friendship group” would “continue to” discuss related matters.

The Argentinian organizers of the summit also live-casted Villarruel and Bukele entering a meeting room together.

Leaders Discuss Volcano Bonds

During this broadcast, a Twitter user captured and circulated a clip where Villarruel told Bukele:

“I really wanted to take advantage of these few minutes [we have together] to talk to you about Bitcoin, because it is something that interests me a lot. I also want to speak about the Volcano Bonds project.”

The bonds project refers to Bukele’s plan to launch “Bitcoin bonds” on the Bitfinex crypto exchange.

Bukele wants to use the income from these bonds to help build a Bitcoin-themed settlement named Bitcoin City.

Villarruel also reportedly said she was keen to learn more about El Salvador’s National Commission for Digital Assets (CNAD).

The CNAD is charged with supervising and promoting the development of the Salvadoran crypto “ecosystem.”

Since Milei took power in late 2023, top Salvadoran and Argentine officials have held several key Bitcoin-themed meetings.

After a summit in March this year, CNAD leaders met the head of the National Securities Commission of Argentina (CNV) in May for BTC-related talks.
